AKLAND B&O MUSEUM SUMMER SPEAKER SERIES
The Oakland B&O Museum begins its summer speaker series next Thursday the 16th. Bruce Elliott from Green Bank, WV will talk about and show pictures of the Cumberland Division “West End” from Oakland to GN tower at the east end of Grafton yards. His photos are shown in chronological order and all seasons are represented.
Bruce Elliott has had a passionate interest in the Baltimore & Ohio railroad his entire life, having literally grown up with it. He is a high school graduate of Walter Johnson HS, in Bethesda, Md. His professional career spanned 28 years with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority as a diesel mechanic. After his retirement, he went to work for the Cass Scenic Railroad, where he rebuilt the "Cass Showcase", a model diorama of the town of Cass, the saw mill and locomotive shops. He also served as the "Showcase" interpreter between 2003 and 2010. Bruce started photographing the B&O with his father in the early 60's, and spent the next 25+ years photographing the B&O in 12 of the 13 Great States that it operated in, amassing close to 8,000 photos. When he wasn't photographing the railroad, he was modeling it, and still does to this day. He has been a member of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Historical Society for the past 30 yrs., a Board Member-at-Large for the past 5 yrs., and is the current Modeling Committee Chairman for the society. The presentation that will be given on the evening of the 16th will be from the B&O's Cumberland Division "West End". Unlike most presenters that have spent time learning about a subject from books and photographs, Mr Elliott's railroad education came "first hand" by spending large amounts of time "out in the field" with a camera. The books and photos that he studied about the B&O only reinforced his desire to go out and see it first hand.
